How accurate is free OCR?
For clean, printed text — documents, signs, screenshots, typed pages — accuracy is typically 95%+ . Handwriting, low-resolution photos, skewed angles, and stylized fonts reduce accuracy noticeably; straightening and cropping the source image first usually helps most.
Does OCR work on handwriting?
It can, but nowhere near as reliably as printed text — handwriting recognition is a much harder problem for any OCR engine, free or paid. Clear block handwriting fares better than cursive.
Is my image uploaded to a server for OCR?
No — the recognition runs entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. The image and the text extracted from it never leave your device, which matters if the image contains sensitive information like an ID or a document.

Why did OCR return no text or garbled text?
Low resolution, blurry focus, low contrast between text and background, or a skewed/rotated angle are the most common causes. Re-photograph the source straight-on in good light, or rotate the image first using our rotate tool if it's sideways.
